Indore and Udaipur get international recognition as accredited wetland cities
- Indore and Udaipur have become the first Indian cities to gain international recognition as accredited wetland cities under the Ramsar Convention, an intergovernmental treaty focused on wetland conservation.
- Although Bhopal was also nominated, it missed out due to ecological concerns. Currently, 85 Indian wetlands are protected under this treaty, which includes 172 member countries globally.
- Accreditation is an international recognition for the cities that value their natural and human-made wetlands. An independent Advisory Committee on Wetland City Accreditation of the Convention in its latest round accredited 31 new cities, including two from India, making the global list of such cities to reach 74.
India’s Determined Path to Tuberculosis Elimination
- India has been at the forefront of the global fight against tuberculosis (TB), implementing various strategies to eliminate the disease. Despite significant progress, challenges persist in achieving the World Health Organization’s (WHO) targets for TB elimination.
- India’s TB control efforts began in 1962 with the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP), which primarily focused on BCG vaccinations. In 1997, the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP) was introduced, adopting the Directly Observed Treatment Short-course (DOTS) strategy to enhance treatment adherence and success rates. By 2005, the RNTCP achieved nationwide coverage. In 2020, the program was renamed the National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP) to reflect a more ambitious goal of eliminating TB by 2025.
- India continues to account for approximately 27% of the global TB burden, with an incidence rate of 210 per 100,000 population in 2021. The country also faces a high prevalence of drug-resistant TB, including Multi-Drug Resistant (MDR) and Extensively Drug Resistant (XDR) TB.
- Nikshay Poshan Yojana: Launched under the National Health Mission, this scheme provides a financial incentive of ₹500 per month to each notified TB patient for nutritional support during treatment.

Micheál Martin Reappointed as Irish PM
- Micheál Martin has been re-elected as Ireland’s Taoiseach (Prime Minister) following a parliamentary vote on January 23, 2025. This marks his second term, having previously served from 2020 to 2022. The vote concluded with 95 in favor and 76 against, leading to the formation of a coalition government comprising Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and independent lawmakers.
- The new government is a continuation of the partnership between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, Ireland’s two dominant center-right parties since 1937. This coalition aims to address pressing national issues through a unified approach.
- Plans include utilizing tax surpluses from U.S. multinationals to invest in public sector projects, enhance infrastructure, reduce taxes, and establish a sovereign wealth fund, aiming to strengthen Ireland’s economic resilience.

RBI Tightens Guidelines for ARCs in Borrower Settlements
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced stricter guidelines for Asset Reconstruction Companies (ARCs) to enhance transparency and accountability in borrower settlements. These revisions aim to standardize procedures and align them with practices of banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs).
- ARCs are now mandated to establish board-approved policies governing borrower settlements. These policies must detail eligibility criteria for one-time settlements, permissible sacrifices based on exposure categories, and methodologies for determining the realizable value of securities.
- For borrowers with outstanding dues exceeding ₹1 crore, settlements require evaluation by an IAC comprising professionals with technical, financial, or legal expertise. The IAC will assess the borrower’s financial position, projected earnings, and recovery prospects before making recommendations.
