NATIONAL
24 companies selected under PLI scheme for White Goods

  • Government has said, 24 companies have been selected under the Production Linked Incentive, PLI Scheme for White Goods (Air Conditioners and LED Lights) with a committed investment of Rs3516 crore rupees.
  • These companies include ten manufacturers of components of Air Conditioners and eight manufacturers of LED Lights. In the third round of the online application window of the PLI Scheme, a total of 38 applications were received
  • Altogether, 84 companies under the PLI Scheme for White Goods are set to bring investments of Rs10,478 crore rupees.

Launch of FinTech Hub in Bhubaneswar

  • The Government of Odisha’s Electronics and IT Department has partnered with Singapore’s Global Finance & Technology Network (GFTN) to establish a Global Competency Centre in Bhubaneswar. This collaboration aims to foster innovation in InsureTech and related areas, aligning with India’s vision of “Insurance for All” by 2047.
  • The initiative seeks to leverage GFTN’s global expertise to drive innovation and develop tailored FinTech solutions in Odisha. The focus is on creating an inclusive and sustainable InsureTech ecosystem.
  • This partnership supports India’s national vision of “Insurance for All” by 2047, aiming to provide every citizen with appropriate life, health, and property insurance coverage.

India-Sri Lanka finalise energy price for Sampur solar plant

  • India and Sri Lanka have finalised the price per unit for energy from the Sampur solar power plant to further strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries.
  • Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake informed in a public meeting yesterday that the price of 5.97 US cents per kilowatt-hour was finalised in the joint venture between National Thermal Power Corporation and Ceylon Electricity Board recently.
  • The 135 mega-watt project is part of India’s contribution to bilateral energy cooperation, highlighting its role as a global leader in renewable energy and a key partner in advancing Sri Lanka’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.

TikTok Suspends Operations Following U.S. Ban

  • TikTok’s brief shutdown in the United States occurred in January 2025 due to the enforcement of a law banning the app due to national security concerns.
  • The law, passed with bipartisan support, required ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell the app to a U.S.-based entity. However, within hours of the shutdown, TikTok was restored, thanks to an intervention by President-elect Donald Trump, who promised to delay the enforcement of the ban through an executive order.
  • TikTok went offline for U.S. users due to the enforcement of a law banning apps developed by ByteDance.
  • Users were met with a message stating the app was unavailable and a “stay tuned” notice.
  • TikTok and other ByteDance apps (Lemon8, CapCut) were also removed from Apple and Google Play stores.

South Korean court issues warrant to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over declaration of martial law

  • In South Korea, a court issued a warrant today to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol for an extended period over his controversial declaration of martial law.
  • The Seoul Western District Court approved the arrest warrant after a lengthy deliberation, citing concerns that Yoon could destroy evidence. Yoon’s arrest may lead to a prolonged period of detention, potentially lasting months.
  • Yoon, detained following a large-scale law enforcement operation at his home, faces potential rebellion charges related to his martial law declaration. This led to South Korea’s most severe political crisis since the 1980s democratisation.

55th Annual Meeting of World Economic Forum to begin in Switzerland

  • The 55th World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting will begin today at Davos in Switzerland. During the five-day event, India’s model of inclusive growth and digital revolution will be highlighted.
  •  The Indian delegation will be spearheaded by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw along with Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil, Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, Food Processing Industries Minister Chirag Paswan and Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Jayant Chaudhary.

India Dominates Inaugural Kho Kho World Cup 2025

  • India has made history by clinching both the men’s and women’s titles at the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup 2025, held from January 13 to 19 at the Indira Gandhi Arena in New Delhi. This landmark event featured 23 countries across six continents, with 20 men’s and 19 women’s teams competing in the fast-paced seven-a-side format.
  • The Indian women’s team mirrored their male counterparts’ success by defeating Nepal 78-40 in the final.
  • This double triumph underscores India’s dominance in the sport, with both teams cementing their legacy as inaugural Kho Kho World Cup champions.
