PM Modi says direct connection between administration and public is important for development
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that aspirational districts are eliminating the barriers to the progress of the country and history is being made in these districts.
- Interacting with district magistrates of the country through video conferencing, he said that these districts are now becoming accelerators of growth with their efforts. He highlighted that convergence is a major reason for the success being seen in the aspirational districts.
- Mr. Modi said that a direct connection between the administration and the public is important for development in aspirational districts. He stressed that technology and innovation are important aspects of this campaign.
- He said that in the last four years, there has been a four to five times increase in Jan Dhan accounts in almost every aspirational district of the country. He said that almost every family now has a toilet, and electricity has reached every village.
- The Prime Minister stated that aspirational districts have proved that optimum utilization of resources can take place when silos are eliminated during implementation. He said, the aim is hundred percent saturation of services and facilities.
- During the meeting, Prime Minister took direct feedback about the progress and present status of implementation of government schemes and programmes in the districts.
UP: BSP releases a list of 51 candidates for 2nd phase of polls
- Bahujan Samaj Party released a list of 51 candidates for the second phase of the elections in Uttar Pradesh.
- Polling will be held on 55 seats in the second phase on 14th February.
- Polling will be completed in seven phases.
- In another event in Lucknow, BJP leader and Union Minister Anurag Singh Thakur and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the party’s 403 LED campaign vans.
- These vans will carry the party’s message to all 403 constituencies in the state.
EC to hold review meeting with Union Health Secretary ahead of assembly elections
- The Election Commission will hold a virtual review meeting with the Union Health Secretary, Chief Secretaries, and Health Secretaries of five poll-bound states.
- The meeting will take stock of the COVID Safety measures during the upcoming assembly elections.
- The meeting assumes significance in the wake of the ban announced by Election Commission on physical rallies and roadshows, amidst the rise in Covid-19 cases.
- While announcing the dates for elections in five states of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, Punjab, and Manipur, the poll panel had announced a ban on physical rallies, road, and bike shows, and similar campaigning events till 15th January.
- Subsequently, it extended the ban till 22nd of January. However, the political parties were allowed to hold indoor meetings of a maximum 300 people or 5 percent of the capacity of the hall, or the prescribed limit set by State Disaster Management Authorities. Counting of votes will take place on 10th of March.

WEF announces annual meeting to be held in person
- The World Economic Forum has announced that its annual meeting will be held in person for the first time during the Covid-19 pandemic, from 22nd of May till 26th of May this year at Davos in Switzerland.
- The annual gathering of the world's political, economic, and business elite traditionally takes place in January against the idyllic snowy backdrop of the Swiss ski resort of Davos.
- But the forum has not been held since January 2020, despite repeated postponements and even a proposed one-off shift to Singapore.
- In a statement, World Economic Forum (WEF) founder and Chairman Klaus Schwab said, after all the virtual meetings taking place in the last two years, leaders from politics, business, and civil society have to convene finally in person again.
- The WEF said, they need to establish the atmosphere of trust that is truly needed to accelerate collaborative action and to address the multiple challenges we face.
- The WEF added, the gathering, under the theme of 'Working Together, Restoring Trust', will offer leaders a chance to take stock of the state of the world and shape policies for the crucial period ahead.
- The Geneva-based organization said it would be in close communication with the Swiss government on the Covid-19 situation in the wealthy Alpine nation.

Syed Modi International tournament: P.V. Sindhu, Mithun Manjunath storms into semi-finals
- In Badminton, Indian shuttlers will be competing in the semi-finals of Syed Modi International tournament in Lucknow. Two-time Olympic medallist P.V. Sindhu will face fifth-seeded Russian Evgeniya Kosetskaya in the Women's Singles semifinals.
- The top-seeded Indian defeated sixth seed Supanida Katething of Thailand 11-21, 21-12, 21-17 in the quarterfinals yesterday.
- In the Men's Singles, Mithun Manjunath will meet Arnaud Merkle of France in the Last Four. Manjunath advanced to the last four after beating Sergey Sirant of Russia 11-21, 21-12, 21-18 in the quarter-final match.
- However, fifth-seeded HS Prannoy crashed out of the tournament with a straight-game defeat to Arnaud Merkle in the quarterfinals.
- In the Mixed Doubles event, the Indian pair of MR Arjun and Treesa Jolly will face compatriots and seventh-seeded pair of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto in the semifinals.
- Arjun and Jolly beat the eight seeded French duo of William Villeger and Anne Tran 24-22, 21-17 in the quarterfinal yesterday. The Bhatnagar-Crasto pair beat another Indian duo of Ashith Surya and Pranjal Prabhu Chimulkar 21-13 21-19 in the quarterfinals.
- In the Men's doubles, sixth-seeded Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala will face fellow Indian pair of Prem Singh Chouhan and Rajesh Verma in the semifinals today. Garaga and Panjala defeated the duo of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Sai Pratheek 21-17 21-18 in an all-India quarterfinal match.
- In the other Men's doubles semifinal match, fourth seeded Indian pair of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will lock horns with Malaysia's Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee. They defeated the French pair of Fabien Delrue and William Villeger 21-16, 19-21, 21-19.
- In the Women's Doubles, Indian pair of Haritha M Harinarayanan and Ashna Roy will take on eight-seeded Malaysian pair of Anna Ching Yik Cheong and Teoh Mei Xing in the semi-finals.
- Seventh-seeded Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Pullela Gopichand will face Malaysia's Low Yeen Yuan and Valeree Siow in another Women's Doubles semifinals match. The Indian pair upset second-seeded Russian duo of Anastasiia Akchurina and Olga Morozova 24-22 21-10 in the quarterfinal match.
