Vice President, PM pay tribute to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary

  • On National Youth Day, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu has called upon India’s youth to lead the transformation of the nation by playing an active role in nation-building. Mr. Naidu said that our youth must dream big and work hard to achieve their goals.
  • Mr. Naidu said that youngsters must take inspiration from Swami Vivekananda and imbibe his values of nationalism, his belief in universal brotherhood, and compassion for the needy. The Vice President said that our youth must always take pride in the richness of Indian culture.
  • Paying tributes to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary, Mr. Naidu said that Swami Vivekananda was a visionary spiritual leader and an iconic ambassador of India.
  • The Vice President said that through his noble thoughts and exemplary eloquence, Swami Vivekananda drew the world's attention to India's rich cultural heritage.
  • Mr. Naidu added that Swami Vivekananda played a stellar role in infusing the spirit of nationalism among Indians. The Vice President said that Swami Vivekananda’s teachings are of inestimable value and remain an eternal source of guidance for humanity.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to Swami Vivekananda on his birth anniversary. In his message, Mr. Modi said Swami Vivekananda's life was devoted to national regeneration. He said he motivated many youngsters to work towards nation-building and asked everyone to keep working together to fulfill the dreams Swami Vivekananda had for the nation.

DRDO successfully tests Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile

  • Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully flight tested Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile.
  • The indigenously developed anti-tank missile is low weight and fire & forget missile.
  • The missile successfully destroyed the target during the test flight.
  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO for the consistent performance of the anti-tank missile saying that this is an important step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat in advanced technology-based defence system development.
  • DRDO Chairman Dr. G Satheesh Reddy congratulated the team for the excellent performance of the missile during the test.

PM Modi inaugurates 11 new Government Medical Colleges across Tamil Nadu

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates 11 New Government Medical Colleges across Tamil Nadu and the new campus of Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai.
  • The new medical colleges are being established at an estimated cost of about 4 thousand crore rupees. Of this amount, around 2 thousand 145 crore rupees have been provided by the Union government and rest by the Tamil Nadu government.
  • The districts in which the new Medical Colleges are being established are Virudhunagar, Namakkal, The Nilgiris, Tiruppur, Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram, and Krishnagiri.
  • The establishment of these medical colleges is in line with the Prime Minister's constant endeavor to promote affordable medical education and improve health infrastructure in all parts of the country.
  • The new medical colleges, with cumulative capacity of 1 thousand 450 seats, are being established under the Centrally Sponsored scheme of ’Establishing of New Medical Colleges attached with existing district and referral hospital’.
  • Under the scheme, medical colleges are established in districts that do not have either a government or private medical college. The establishment of a new campus of Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai is in line with the Prime Minister’s vision to protect and preserve Indian heritage and promote classical languages.
  • The new campus is fully funded by the Union Government. It is built at a cost of 24 Crore rupees. The Institute which was operating from a rented building so far will now operate from a new 3 storied campus.
  • The new campus is equipped with a spacious library, an e-library, seminar halls and a multimedia hall. The new campus will provide an efficient working environment for the institute in its pursuit of promoting classical Tamil across the world.

U.S. announces 308 million in humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan as crisis grows

  • The United States has announced $308 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Afghanistan as it edges toward a humanitarian crisis since the Taliban takeover nearly five months ago.
  • White House National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne said in a statement that the new aid from the US Agency for International Development will flow through independent humanitarian organizations and will be used to provide shelter, health care, emergency food aid, water, sanitation, and hygiene services.

 Indian economy to grow at 8.3 percent during current financial year and 8.7 percent in next fiscal: World Bank

  • World Bank has said that Indian economy is expected to grow at 8.3 percent in the current financial year.
  • It has upgraded India's GDP growth for the next fiscal to 8.7 percent, reflecting higher investment from the private sector and in infrastructure, and dividends from ongoing reforms.
  • In its latest Global Economic Prospects, World Bank said, the growth outlook will also be supported by ongoing structural reforms, a better-than-expected financial sector recovery, and measures to resolve financial sector challenges despite ongoing risks.
  • It said, global economic growth will dip to 4.1 percent in current financial year and 3.2 percent in the next fiscal.

India Open: SainaNehwal to take on Czech player in 1st round

  • In Badminton, ace shuttlerSainaNehwal will take on Czech badminton player TerezaŠvábíková in the first round of women's singles of Yonex-Sunrise India Open at K.D. Jadhav Indoor Hall in Delhi.
  • While Nehwal is ranked 25th, the little-known Svabikova is placed 117. In another encounter, HS Prannoy will clash with Spanish Pablo Abian, Ajay Jayaram will lock horns with Irish badminton player Nhat Nguyen and Lakshya Sen will fight it out against Egyptian Adham Hatem Elgamal in the first round of men's singles.
  • Other players who will be participating in doubles matches include Ashwini Ponnappa, N Sikki Reddy, SatwiksairajRankireddy, and Chirag Shetty.
  • Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu defeated compatriot Sri Krishna Priya in straight games to enter the second round of the Women's Singles event.
  • In Men's Singles, World Championship silver medallistKidambi Srikanth triumphed over SirilVerma in the first round. He will take on Denmark's Kim Bruun.
  • Among other winners of the day who progressed to the next round of the tournament include, double's pair RitikaThaker and Simran Singh, mixed doubles pairings of DhruvKapila and N Sikki Reddy, and Gayatri Gopichand Pullela and Sai Pratheek K.
  • The men’s doubles top seeds Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia also got their campaign off to a winning start.
