India Approves Eight New National High-Speed Road Corridors

  • The Government of India took a significant step towards enhancing the country’s transportation infrastructure.
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the construction of eight new national high-speed corridor projects. This decision marks a pivotal moment in India’s ongoing efforts to modernize and expand its road network to meet current and future demands.
  • The approved projects encompass a total of 936 kilometers of new road construction across various parts of India. The government has allocated a substantial budget of Rs 50,655 crore for these initiatives, underscoring the magnitude and importance of this infrastructure development plan.
  • India boasts the second-largest road network globally, following the United States.
  • As of December 31, 2022, India’s total road network spans 63.32 lakh kilometers.
  • National Highways constitute 1,44,955 km of this network.

Iconic Classical Dancer Yamini Krishnamurthy Passes Away

  • India lost one of its most revered classical dancers, Yamini Krishnamurthy, who passed away at the age of 83 at Apollo hospital in New Delhi. Known for her mastery over Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Odissi, Krishnamurthy was a luminary who helped elevate Indian classical dance to the global stage.
  • Her contributions to Indian classical dance were acknowledged with numerous prestigious wards:
  • Padma Shri in 1968, at the age of 28
  • Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1977
  • Padma Bhushan in 2001
  • Padma Vibhushan in 2016

INS Tabar Completes MPX with Russian Ship Soobrazitelny

  • Indian Navy’s frontline frigate, INS Tabar, arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia, on July 25, 2024, to participate in the 328th Russian Navy Day Parade celebrations. This visit aimed to strengthen the longstanding maritime cooperation and friendship between India and Russia.
  • INS Tabar successfully conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with the Russian Navy’s ship Soobrazitelny. The exercise included a series of complex naval maneuvers such as communication drills, search and rescue tactics, and replenishment at sea operations.
  • The Indian Navy continues to focus on enhancing global partnerships, and the successful MPX with the Russian Navy further solidifies their resolve to foster stronger bilateral naval ties and cooperative efforts in the maritime domain.

Nepal PM calls for developing nation’s waterways and railways to enhance connectivity with India

  • Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called for developing the nation’s waterways and railways to enhance connectivity with India.
  •  In an annual progress review meeting of the Department of Road under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Mr Oli directed civil servants to draft a plan for operating steamer services from Hanumannagar, near the Indian border, to Triveni and Devghat.
  • Despite the existence of a law permitting steamer services in Nepal since 1970, such infrastructure has not been utilised, which is unfortunate.
  •  Emphasising that waterway transport is a cost-effective method for moving goods and people, Mr Oli directed the officials to workout a plan to operate steamers in the country very soon. In addition to waterways, Mr Oli stressed the need to expand Nepal’s railway services and called for the addition of two railway lines to the existing Janakpur-Kurtha railway line. Mr Oli also proposed the development of an East-West railway line in Nepal, which he said could also benefit Indian nationals travelling from Guwahati to Delhi and Siliguri to Haridwar via Nepal.

India Selects Crew for Axiom-4 Mission to ISS

  • India has announced the selection of two astronauts, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair, for the upcoming Axiom-4 mission to the International Space Station (ISS). This mission represents a significant step in strengthening human spaceflight cooperation between ISRO and NASA, as well as advancing India’s own human space program.
  • The experience gained from this mission will enhance India’s human spaceflight capabilities and bolster collaboration between ISRO and NASA.
  • This mission is a precursor to the Gaganyaan mission, which aims to demonstrate India’s human spaceflight capability with a planned three-day orbit and safe return.

NIT-C Launches ‘Nivahika’ Web Portal For Data Management

  • National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) has taken a significant leap in data management with the launch of its cutting-edge web portal, ‘Nivahika.’ Inaugurated by Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NITC, in a ceremony at the Senate Hall, the portal is set to transform how the Institute handles and reports data.
  • Nivahika will not only streamline the availability of institutional data but will also provide secure access to authorized personnel. It is further noted that the portal’s automated report generation capability marks a significant advancement in how the institute handles data.
