Chief Justice of India and Seychelles to inaugurate international conference on Law and Technology

  • An international conference on “Law and Technology: Sustainable, Transport, Tourism and Technological Innovations” organised by the Commonwealth Legal Education Association will be inaugurated jointly by Chief Justice of India Dr D Y Chandrachud and the Chief Justice of Seychelles Justice Roney Govinden at Kumarakom in Kottayam district, Kerala this morning.
  • Supreme Court judges, High Court judges, Attorney Generals, legal luminaries, academicians and technocrats are participating in the three-day conference. Judges from Malaysia, Seychelles, Nepal, Fiji and Vice Chancellors from the National Law Universities are also participating in the event. The conference aims to foster international cooperation, share best practices and develop innovative legal solutions to complex challenges pertaining to sustainable transport and tourism.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra to be Nominated as Thailand’s New PM

  • Thailand’s Populist Pheu Thai Party today said it will nominate its party leader, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, in a Parliament vote for the country’s new leader. The move comes after former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was removed by a court order over an ethical violation.
  • If Ms Paetongtarn is approved by Parliament’s vote, she will become Thailand’s second Woman Prime Minister, and the country’s third leader from the Shinawatra family after her father and her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra.
  • Mr. Srettha was ousted yesterday after less than a year in office. The Constitutional Court found him guilty of a serious ethical breach regarding his appointment of a Cabinet member who was jailed in connection with an alleged bribery attempt.

6th India-Australia Maritime Dialogue & 14th Counter-Terrorism Meeting

  • India and Australia recently held two significant bilateral meetings to enhance their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Australia hosted the 6th India-Australia Maritime Security Dialogue in Canberra, while India hosted the 14th India-Australia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism in New Delhi. Both dialogues aimed at strengthening cooperation in maritime security and counter-terrorism.
  • Focused on strengthening cooperation to counter terrorism, exchanging views on regional and global terrorism, condemning terrorism in all forms, and emphasizing the need for enhanced international cooperation.

India’s new rocket SSLV-D3 lifts off with earth observation satellite (EOS-08)

  • India’s new rocket Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV-D3) lifted off with an earth observation satellite-08 (EOS-08) weighing 175.5 kg this morning. Piggybacking on that was another small satellite SR-0 made by a Chennai based start-up Space Rickshaw SR-0.
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has developed SSLV with a carrying capacity of 500 kg to the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based on the market trend of going in for smaller satellites.
  • At about 9.17 a.m., the 34-metre tall and about 119-ton expendable rocket costing about Rs 56 crore broke free of the first launch pad and started its one-way journey upwards. The rocket with a thick orange flame at its tail slowly gathered speed and went up and up. As to the mission’s objectives, ISRO said that it will complete the SSLV Development Project and enable operational missions by Indian industry and the public sector NewSpace India Ltd.

Sweden confirms first case of mpox outside Africa after WHO declares it a global public health emergency

  • Sweden has reported its first mpox case on Thursday, a day after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the infection a global public health emergency. With this, Sweden has also become the first country outside the African continent to report the more contagious strain of mpox virus.
  • The patient is believed to have contracted the virus during a visit to a region in Africa currently experiencing a major outbreak of mpox clade I. On Wednesday, the WHO declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo that has spread to other countries.
