NATIONAL
67th National Film Awards presented

  • Vice President M.Venkaiah Naidu presented the 67th National Film awards on October 25, 2021.
  • 51st DadasahebPhalke Award was conferred to actor Rajinikanth.
  • ManojBajpayee, KanganaRanaut and Dhanush were conferred with acting honours.
  • Best Feature Film award was given to Priyadarshan’s Malayalam period epic named ‘Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea’.
  • Best Hindi Film Award was presented to Chhichhore movie, starring the late Sushant Singh Rajput.
  • 67th National Film awards were announced in March 2021 however, they were honouredthe best in cinema in the year 2019. Awards were postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic.

UDAN 4.1: First direct flight on Shillong-Dibrugarh route

  • Union Civil Aviation Minister, JyotiradityaScindia, inaugurated the first direct flight on Shillong–Dibrugarh sector on October 26, 2021.
  • This flight was made operational under the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) UdeDeshKaAamNaagrik (UDAN).
  • In September 2021, Shillong airport witnessed more than 5000 passengers.
  • Shillong is one among the highest & wettest places of the world. It is important not only for India but for the entire world. It has always been known as Scotland of East because of presence of rolling hills, tallest waterfalls, caves, beautiful landscapes as well as its rich heritage & culture. The place attracts tourists from entire world. This, it is necessary to improve connectivity there.
  • UDAN 4.1 scheme was launched in 2020. Under this phase, 78 new routes were approved under this phase, to enhance connectivity across remote & regional areas in India. Under this route, it was planned to connect Agatti, Kavaratti, and Minicoy islands of Lakshadweep. It focuses on connecting smaller airports, special helicopters, and seaplane routes.
  • UdeDeshkaAamNagrik (UDAN) was launched in the year 2016, as a regional connectivity scheme by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. It is an innovative scheme that was launched to develop regional Aviation market. Its main objective is to create affordable, economically viable and profitable flights across the regional routes.

INTERNATIONAL
India-Kyrgyzstan hold First Strategic Dialogue

  • On October 26, 2021, India and Kyrgyzstan held their first strategic dialogue in New Delhi.
  • During the summit, both the countries agreed to enhance security &defence cooperation.
  • The cooperation seeks to address common threats and challenges faced by them.
  • Both, India & Kyrgyzstan, are facing threat and challenges due to situation in Afghanistan.
  • They also held discussions on regional security environment with special reference to Afghanistan.
  • Both agreed upon steps for enhancing bilateral security cooperation among relevant bodies, such as fields of counterterrorism, narcotics control, combating radicalization, and defence cooperation.
  • India shares close relations with Central Asia, especially with the countries that were part of ancient Silk Route, including Kyrgyzstan. Both had limited political, economic, and cultural ties. In the year 1985, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi visited Bishkek and Issyk Kul Lake. India established diplomatic relations with Kyrgyzstan in 1992 after the independence of Kyrgyzstan on August 31, 1991. India set up resident Mission in 1994.

India-Sweden celebrate Innovation Day

  • India and Sweden celebrated the 8th Innovation Day on October 26. During the online event they discussed several aspects of climate change and possible solutions to bring in green transition.
  • The one-day event was divided into nine parts for discussing several aspects of climate change. Both sides also discussed possible solutions to initiate green transition.
  • In the session, they also exchanged the ideas for implementing digital technology and Artificial Intelligence in order to introduce climate-friendly solutions.

Theme of the event

  • The online event was organized under the theme ‘Accelerating India Sweden’s Green Transition’.
  • India Sweden Innovation Day was hosted by “India Unlimited” in collaboration with the Embassy of India in Sweden, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Sweden-India Business Council.

United States calls for support to Taiwan's participation in UN system

  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has called on United Nations member states to back Taiwan's meaningful participation in the UN system amid China's continued efforts to limit the island's international participation.
  • Arguing for Taiwan's robust participation in the UN, the top US diplomat said that the island's exclusion undermines the important work of the UN and its related bodies. Mr.Blinken noted that despite the tens of millions of passengers travelling annually through its airports, Taiwan was not represented at the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) triennial assembly.
  • Despite world-class response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan was not at the World Health Assembly.
  • Members of civil society from around the world engage every day in activities at the UN, but Taiwan's scientists, technical experts, business persons, artists, educators, students, human rights advocates and others are blocked from entry and participating in these activities simply because of the passports they hold. His remarks come a few days after US and Taiwan held a high-level meeting on expanding the island's participation at the United Nations and in other international organizations.
  • As world leaders prepare for Glasgow, this report is another thundering wake-up call. He further said, unless global carbon emissions are reduced by 45 per cent from 2010 levels by 2030, the Paris Agreement goal of temperature rise of 1.5 degrees will not be obtained.

ASEAN pulls up Myanmar for non-participation in the summit meeting

  • Several leaders of the ASEAN regional grouping pulled up Myanmar for abstaining from participating in the summit meeting.
  •  Myanmar refused to send any representative to the summit after ASEAN decided to invite a ‘non-political’ representative from Myanmar. The unprecedented step of ASEAN came in the backdrop of Myanmar not allowing the ASEAN special envoy to visit Myanmar as part of the five-point agreement reached during the April meeting of the grouping.
  • The Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said that ASEAN did not expel Myanmar but Myanmar abandoned its right. He said that now ASEAN is in a position of ASEAN minus one, reports Reuters. He blamed Myanmar for this situation. Cambodia is scheduled to become the Chairman of the group next year.
  • The Indonesian President Joko Widodo called it an ‘unwelcome attitude’ by Myanmar. Reuters quoted the Indonesian President as saying that it’s important for ASEAN to honour the principles of non-interference but we are also obligated to uphold other principles like democracy, good governance, respect for human rights and a constitutional government.
  • Earlier, the Myanmar Ministry of Foreign Affairs had said that ASEAN’s decision to downgrade the level of its participation in the summit was not in line with the ASEAN Charter or the group’s precedent.

ENVIRONMENT
UN warns world still on track for catastrophic global temperature rise of around 2.7 degrees Celsius

  • United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterreshas stressed the need to close the leadership gap in climate action before the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland. He made the plea at the launch of the UN Environment Programme's Emissions Gap Report-2021, entitled 'The Heat Is On.'
  • The report shows that with the present Nationally Determined Contributions and other firm commitments of countries around the world, the world is on track for a catastrophic global temperature rise of around 2.7 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. He also said the clock is ticking. The emissions gap is the result of a leadership gap. But, leaders can still make this a turning point to a greener future instead of a tipping point to climate catastrophe.

Indian-Origin politician Anita Anand appointed as Canada's new Defence Minister

  • In Canada, Indian-origin politician Anita Anand was appointed as the new Defence Minister in a Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, over a month after his Liberal Party returned power in the snap polls and amid calls for major military reforms.
  • Ms. Anand, will replace long-time Defence Minister Indian-origin HarjitSajjan, whose handling of the military sexual misconduct crisis has been under criticism.
  • The new Cabinet maintains gender balance and has 38 members, up one person from before the election.
  • Ms. Anand has a deep background as a corporate lawyer and has worked extensively on corporate governance, which refers specifically to the laws and rules in place to manage the operations of businesses. Ms. Anand, along with Sajjan and BardishChagger were the three Indo-Canadian Ministers in the dissolved Cabinet who emerged victorious in the Parliamentary polls last month.

Sameer Verma advances to second round of men's singles of French Open Badminton

  • In Badminton, Sameer Verma advanced to the second round of Men's Singles of the French Open in Paris.
  • SamerVerma beat South Korea's Lee Dong Keun 21-14, 21-12 in the opening round.  Sameer Verma will next face Indonesia's Shesar Hiren Rhustavito.
  • Meanwhile, the Mixed Doubles pair of DhruvKapila and N. Sikki Reddy were knocked out in the first round.
  • Two-time Olympic medallistP.V. Sindhu will begin her Women's Singles campaign against Denmark's Julie DawallJakobsen while Kidambi Srikanth has been drawn against KentoMomota of Japan.

Rohit, Akash start India’s campaign at World Boxing Championships with commanding victories

  • In Boxing, RohitMor and Akash Sangwan started India’s campaign at the 2021 AIBA Men’s World Championships with commanding victories on an opening day in Belgrade, Serbia.
  • Rohit set the tone for India after defeating Olympian Jean Caicedo5-0 comprehensively in the 57-kg opening round match.
  • The 20-Year-Old Indian made good use of his height and hit some timely heavy blows to score crucial points against the Ecuadorian Pugilist.
  • Later Akash extended the winning momentum for India and produced an equally dominating show against AdemFukran of Turkey in the 67-kg Bout. The 21-year-old Akash showcased well attacking as well as defensive skills of Boxing and hardly allowed the Turkish Boxer to score any points before completing a 5-0 win in a lopsided match.
  • In the round-of-32, Rohit will take on AlenRahimic of Bosnia and Herzegovina while Akash will be up against German Boxer Daniel Krotter on Thursday.
