- Gully boy has been nominated for 92nd Oscar Awards
The movie Gully Boy has been selected as India's official entry to the 92nd Oscar Awards. The ceremony has been scheduled to take place on 9th February 2020.
BACKGROUND:
The Zoya Akhtar directorial has drawn inspiration from the lives of Mumbai street rappers Vivian Fernandes aka Divine and Naved Shaikh aka Naezy. The story revolves around the underground rap movement in India.
Gully Boy was started by Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt along with Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi and Vijay Raaz in pivotal roles.
The film received a number of awards including the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, South Korea and Best Film at the Indian Festival of Melbourne in August 2019.
- Sonu Nigam has been honoured with the Magnificent Performing Arts Award
Sonu Nigam, the Popular Bollywood playback singer, was honoured with the Magnificent Performing Arts Award at the 21st Century Icon Awards in London.
Nigam was among a host of winners across a range of categories at a gala awards ceremony held at the UK.
- Gehlot distributed prizes to the winners of 2nd Sign Language Competition
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Shri Thaawarchand Gehlot distributed prizes to the students of 2nd Sign Language Competition on the occasion of Sign Language Day which was observed on 23 September.
The day was observed by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC), an autonomous body under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
- Journalist Ravish Kumar awarded first Gauri Lankesh Memorial Award
Senior journalist and Ramon Magsaysay awardee Ravish Kumar received the first Gauri Lankesh Memorial Award in Bengaluru
He was chosen for the award for sharp news analysis and uncompromising secular stance by the Gauri Lankesh Memorial Trust, founded in memory of the journalist.
Three books launched at the event titled Delhi Nota by senior journalist D Umapathi, Ravish Kumar’s ‘Free Voices’ translated as Maatige Enu Kadime and Neera Nade by Prof Vinaya Okkunda.
- President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the 2017 to 2018 NSS Awards
President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the National Service Scheme Awards 2017-18 in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
Aim: The award aims to recognize and reward the outstanding contributions towards voluntary community service made by the Universities and Senior Secondary Councils, NSS Units/ Programme Officers and NSS Volunteers.
- Centre institutes national unity award named after Sardar Patel
The Centre has instituted the highest civilian award for contribution to the unity and integrity of India, in the name of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
The award seeks to recognize notable and inspiring contributions to promote the cause of national unity and integrity and to reinforce the value of a strong and united India.
The award will be announced on the occasion of the National Unity Day on the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel on 31st of October.
Home Ministry has issued a notification in this regard on 20th of this month.
The award will be conferred by the President by a Sanad under his hand and seal and presented by him in a presentation ceremony along with the Padma award presentation ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
An Award Committee would be constituted by the Prime Minister, which would include the Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Secretary to the President, Home Secretary as Members and three-four eminent persons selected by the Prime Minister.
The award would consist of a medal and a citation. No monetary grant or cash award would be attached to this Award. Not more than three awards would be given in a year.
It would not be conferred posthumously except in very rare and highly deserving cases.
Any Indian national or institution or organization based in India would be able to nominate an individual for consideration for this Award.
Individuals may also nominate themselves.
State Governments, Union Territory Administrations and Ministries of Government of India may also send nominations.
- Payal Jangid received the Changemaker Award
Payal Jangid, an Indian teenager, received the Changemaker Award at the Goalkeepers Global Goals Awards in New York.
The award recognized her campaign to end child labour and child marriage. The award was presented to her by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The 17-year-old Rajasthani girl Payal Jangid fought against her own marriage at the age of 11. She is currently campaigning to discourage child marriage and persuade parents to keep their children in education.
Payal served as the President of her village’s Children’s Parliament (Bal Panchayat). She has conducted numerous field activities to empower women and children of her own village and villages nearby. She organized rallies and protests and worked with various women’s groups and youth forums of her village and surrounding villages.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest private foundation in the world. It was established in the year 2000.
It is located in Seattle, Washington. The foundation is claimed by a very rich person donor Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his significant other Melinda Gates.
Global Goalkeeper Award 2019 is a special award of the foundation.
It celebrates a leader who has demonstrated their commitment to the Global Goals through impactful work in their country or/and globally.
- Greta Thunberg,16year old won alternative Noble prize
Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg was named as one of four winners of the 2019 Right Livelihood Award.
The award is also known as Sweden's alternative Nobel Prize. She was awarded for inspiring and amplifying political demands for urgent climate action reflecting scientific facts. The award was announced by the Right Livelihood Foundation. The awardees triggered a thirst to strive for a liveable future for all on planet Earth.
Along with Thunberg, 3 other visionaries were awarded. The award recipients are:
Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg
Chinese women's rights lawyer Guo Jianmei
Davi Kopenawa of the Yanomami people, the Brazilian indigenous leader
Western Sahara human rights defender Aminatou Haidar.
The 4 laureates received a cash award of 1 million Swedish crowns ($103,000) each.
The 16-year-old denounced the world leaders for failing to tackle climate change in a speech at the start of a climate summit at the United Nations in New York.
The climate activist started solitary weekly protests outside the Swedish parliament a year ago.
Millions of young people were inspired by her and started to demand the governments that attended the summit to take emergency action.
- Corps Of Army Air Defence honoured with President’s Colours Award
President Ram Nath Kovind presented the prestigious President’s Colours to the Corps of Army Air Defence at a function in Gopalpur in Ganjam district of Odisha.
The award was given to the Corps on the occasion of 25 years of Army Air Defence College, AADC.
It was received by Army AD Centre on behalf of the Corps of Army Air Defence.
In his address, President Kovind recalled the glorious legacy of the Indian Armed Forces in protecting the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the nation, in general, and the Corps of Army Air Defence, in particular.
The President’s Colours is the highest military honour for the armed forces bestowed in recognition of exceptional services rendered to the nation, both during the war and in peace times.
One of the youngest corps of Army, the Army Air Defence Corps bifurcated from the Regiment of Artillery in 1989 and established the Army Air Defence College.
The AADC is the training school for the personnel of the Air Defence Corps.
- National Tourism Awards 2017-18 presented
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu presented the National Tourism Awards 2017-18 on World Tourism Day in New Delhi on 27 September 2019.
A total of 76 Awards under various categories were presented.
On this occasion, a workshop on ‘ Tourism Jobs of the Future’ was also organized by UNWTO in collaboration with its affiliate member in India, Outlook Responsible Tourism Initiative.
- Microsoft Bill Gates to Honour PM Modi with Annual Goalkeepers Global Goals Award
Microsoft Bill Gates honor India Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 which gave the state its special status.
A dozen people, some wearing Free Kashmir T-shirts, with the Justice for All coalition delivered 100,000 petition signatures to the Gates Foundation's Seattle headquarters. It is the world's largest private nonprofit not to honor Modi's Swachh Bharat Mission, a sanitation initiative that improved access to toilets.
The Gates Foundation in a statement said it respects the petitioners' views, but Modi will receive its annual Goalkeepers Global Goals Award for providing 500 million people in India safer sanitation.
The Gates Foundation's annual event focusing on global inequality on September 24 and 25 coincides with the UN General Assembly gathering and has drawn big-name politicians and celebrities, from Barack Obama to Ed Sheeran.
The Gates Foundation confirmed actors JameelaJamil and Riz Ahmed have dropped out of their event. Jamil, who stars in the US sitcom The Good Place hinted at the geopolitical tensions
The White House said Trump will use the "Howdy, Modi! Shared Dreams, Bright Futures" event to "emphasize the strong ties between the people of the United States and India" and reaffirm the two countries' strategic partnership.

- Twenty two scientists received 2018 National Geoscience Awards
Twenty-two scientists were awarded the National Geoscience Awards for the year 2018. They were awarded for their outstanding contributions in the field of geosciences, mining, and allied areas.
The award was conferred by the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines, ShriPralhad Joshi.

The award aims to strengthen the synergy between the professional and academic institutions working in the field of geoscience.
- 'Oscar Of Science' Award announced
The team from the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration project won the ‘Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics’ - an award considered the ‘Oscars of Science’.
The team won a prize of $3 million for their work.
The Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration project published the first image of a supermassive black hole.
- Bangladesh: Prof Muhammad Yunus conferred 'Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis ' award
Nobel Laureate from Bangladesh Professor Muhammad Yunus was conferred the 'Lamp of Peace of Saint Francis ' award by the Vatican for his contribution towards establishing peace and harmony.
The award is a recognition for distinguished work by an individual for promoting peace and dialogue among people.
The ceremony took place at the historical Papal Basilica of Assisi in Italy on Tuesday. In his acceptance speech Professor Yunus said that extreme concentration of wealth, environmental degradation and rise of artificial intelligence threaten the existence of mankind.
The Lamp of Peace award was first given to the Polish trade union leader Lech Walesa in 1981. Dalai Lama, Mikhail Gorbachev and Angela Merkel are a few other prominent persons who received this award earlier.
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus won top honours
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has won the best Swachh Iconic Place award for 2019, topping the charts in cleanliness.
The Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, has declared phase I of the Swachh Iconic Awards.
The award will be given at a ceremony during the Swachh Mahotsav in Delhi on September 6, 2019.
