  • CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2019
    Current Affairs NTPC Ltd. has won the CII-ITC Sustainability Award 2019, under Outstanding Accomplishment in Corporate Excellence Category.

    Key Points
    CII-ITC Sustainability Award

    Instituted by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CESD) in 2006.

    CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed organization, having members from the private as well as public sectors. It also has links with 288 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.

    It works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the development of India, industry, Government and civil society, through advisory and consultative processes.

    It is headquartered in New Delhi.

    Rationale Behind the Award:
    Identifying and recognising exemplary performance in economic, social and environmental dimensions of Indian business,

    Promoting role models in Indian industry and recognising excellence achieved by businesses in mainstreaming Sustainability with business practices and

    Imparting knowledge by which the CESD builds capacity in Indian businesses to adopt sustainability practices.

    NTPC Ltd:
    It is India’s largest power corporation, established in 1975 to accelerate power development in India. It is headquartered in New Delhi.

    It became a Maharatna company in May 2010. It is under the Ministry of Power.

    Recent Initiatives:
    Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program GEM (Girl Empowerment Mission) to uplift girls from the remote areas of the country.

    Contractors’ Labour Information Management System (CLIMS) through which payment to contract labourers is paid on the last day of the month at project sites.

  • Hockey Player Ashok Kumar, Honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award of Mohun Bagan Football Club
    On 13th July 2020, the 70 years old Legendary Hockey Player Ashok Kumar, key player of the 1975 World Cup winning Indian Hockey team was honoured with the Lifetime achievement award by the Kolkata based football club – Mohun Bagan Athletic Club on its foundation day over the virtual ceremony.

    Mohun Bagan Day:
    Every year 29th July is celebrated as the Mohun Bagan Day commemorating their victory against East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 in 1911 Indian Football Association (IFA) Shield, becoming the first Indian Club to defeat British.

    Events of 2020 Mohun Bagan Day:
    The Club decided not to celebrate any physical programme for 2020 Mohun Bagan Day on 29th July 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

    The awards will be personally presented to the awardees available in Kolkata and for the other awardees the award will be handed after the pandemic.

    Ashok Kumar:
    Ashok Kumar is the son of Hockey wizard Dhyan Chand.

    He represented Bengal in the late 1960 and was later selected to the Indian Hockey team.

    He won silver medals in the three consecutive Asian Games of 1970, 1974 and 1978.

    He also won the bronze and silver in the 1971 and 1973 World Cups and won the gold for India in 1975 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur against Pakistan.

    He won the bronze medal in the Munich Olympic games in 1972.

  • Diana Award
    Current Affairs A 13-year-old schoolgirl from Delhi has been selected among the recipients of the 2020 Diana Award, an honour given on the birth anniversary of Princess Diana (of Wales) to youngsters for humanitarian efforts.

    Key Points
    She received the award for developing Recycler App, a web-based mobile application to connect users with waste-handlers. The door-to-door pick up service helps in easy disposal of recyclable waste for those who may not have the means or time to travel to drop their waste.

    The app also claims to be helpful for waste-handlers, whose earnings are usually low and are vulnerable to health issues because of improper handling of waste.

    Her work on sustainable recycling is a valuable contribution towards achieving the United Nation-mandated Sustainable Development Goals of poverty alleviation, innovation, infrastructure, responsible consumption and climate action.

    Diana Awards were established in 1999 and it is considered one of the highest accolades a young person can receive for social action or humanitarian efforts.
