  • Vice President to give away 66th National Film Awards
    Current AffairsVice President M. Venkaiah Naidu will give away the 66th National Film Awards at a function in New Delhi today (23rd December, 2019)

    Gujarati movie Hellaro will be awarded the best feature film.

    Bollywood actors Ayushmann Khurrana and Vicky Kaushal have been selected for best actor award for their roles in Andhadhun and Uri. Keerthy Suresh will get the best actress award for her portrayal of yesteryear's star Savitri in Telugu film Mahanati.

    Best Director award will be given to Aditya Dhar for his debut film Uri: The Surgical Strike.

    Veteran actor Surekha Sikri bagged the best supporting actress for her role of a cantankerous matriarch in the movie.

    Singer-lyricist Swanand Kirkire has won the best supporting actor award for Marathi film Chumbak. Akshay Kumar-starrer Padman has been named the best film on social issues.

    Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavaat will get the award for best choreography for the song Ghoomer.

    Bhansali will receive best music director award.

    Arijit Singh has been selected as the best male playback singer on the song Vinte Dil in Padmavaat.

    Bindhu Malini will get the award for Best Female Playback Singer for her Song Maayavi Manave in Kannada movie Nathicharami.

    Marathi movie Paani has won the award for Best Film on Environment Conservation and Preservation.

    Kannada film Ondalla Eradalla will get Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration.

    Son Rise and the Secret Life of Frogs directed by Vibha Bakshi will receive the award for Best Non-Feature Film. Uttarakhand will be awarded as the Most Film Friendly State.

  • WCD Ministry invites application for Nari Shakti Puraskar for 2019
    Ministry of Women and Child Development has invited applications for Nari Shakti Puraskar for the year 2019.

    The National Award is given annually to individuals, groups, institutions in recognition of their exceptional work towards the cause of women empowerment, especially for vulnerable and marginalized women.

    Nearly 40 Nari Shakti Puraskar will be given on International Women’s Day observed on 8th March 2020.

    Details of eligibility criteria and guidelines are available on the portal - www.narishaktipuraskar.wcd.gov.in. The last date for submission of applications is 7th of January.

  • President Ram Nath Kovind to present Visitor’s awards 2019
    Current AffairsPresident Ram Nath Kovind will present the Visitor’s awards, 2019 at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 17 December, 2019.

    The awards will be conferred during the conference of Vice-Chancellors of Central Universities, Directors of IISERs and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Subsequent to the presentation of the awards, the conference will witness presentations by several sub groups of the heads of institutions.

    These will on issues such as the promotion of research, innovation and entrepreneurship, industry-academia linkages, filling up of vacancies, creating and utilising alumni-based endowment funds and completing infrastructure projects.

    Apart from the heads of 49 institutions of higher learning, Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Sanjay Dhotre will attend the Conference.

    Secretaries of concerned Departments, Chairmen of University Grants Commission and AICTE will also take part in it.

  • Gujarat police was honoured with the President’s Colours award on 15 December
    Gujarat police was honoured with the President's Colours award on 15 December 2019.

    Gujarat became the seventh state police force in India to be bestowed with the honour of the President’s Colours.

    It was presented by the Vice President, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu. He paid homage martyrs of Gujarat Police.

    President's Colours is also called NISHAAN. Now, the emblem will be worn by all the police officers of Gujarat on the left-hand sleeve of their uniform.

    The President's Colour is the highest honour bestowed upon a police force in India.

    The honour recognizes the invaluable contribution of the police force to society.

    Earlier, it was awarded to states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura and Assam.

  • UT of J&K selected for national award
    UT of Jammu and Kashmir has been selected for national award by Union Rural Development Ministry for best performance in the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).

    The award distribution ceremony will be held at Pusa, New Delhi on 19th Dec 2019.

    147 Road and Bridge projects under PMGSY-II covering a length of 783.88 km were sanctioned for J&K and Ladakh.

  • Bangladesh National Film Awards 2017 & 2018 presented in Dhaka
    Current AffairsThe National Film Awards of Bangladesh for the years 2017 and 2018 were given away by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 8 December, 2019 in Dhaka.

    Four outstanding personalities of cinema in Bangladesh ATM Shamsuzzaman, Prabir Mitra, Alamgir and Sujata were presented the Lifetime Achievement Award for their contribution to the film industry.

    Badrul Anam Saud was given the award for best director for the year 2017 for the film Gohin Baluchor. The best director award for 2018 was conferred on Mustafizur Rahman Manik for his film Jannat.

    In the lead role category for males, Shakib Khan and Arifin Shuvo jointly won the award for best actor for the year 2017 for their roles in Shotta and Dhaka Attack, respectively. In the female lead role category, Nusrat Imrose Tisha got the best actor award for her role in Haldaa.

    The best actor award for the year 2018 was given jointly to Ferdous and Symon Sadiq for their roles in Putro and Jannat respectively.

    Jaya Ahsan won best actor award for female for her role in Debi.

  • Zozibini Tunzi was crowned as the 2019 Miss Universe (GK>stock)
    South Africa`s Zozibini Tunzi was crowned as the Miss Universe 2019. Zozibini and Miss Universe Puerto Rico Madison Anderson were the top two contestants for the 2019 Miss Universe title.

    Miss Universe Mexico Sofia Aragon won third place. Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray crowned Zozibini Tunzi, the winner of the title, at the event held in Atlanta on 8 December.

    Zozibini Tunzi, 26-year-old, is from South Africa. She fights against gender-based violence.

    She devoted her social media campaign to change the narrative around gender stereotypes. She is a proud advocate for natural beauty. She encourages women to love themselves the way they are.

    The 2019 Miss Universe pageant was held on 8 December 2019 in Atlanta, the US. 90 finalists participated in the pageant contest.

  • Peter Handke received the Nobel Prize
    Austrian novelist and screenplay writer Peter Handke received his Nobel Literature Prize on 10 December, 2019 amid criticism of him in Sweden and abroad as an apologist for Serb war crimes in the 1990s.

    He received the 9 million-kronor ($948,000) award from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a ceremony in Stockholm.

    Representatives of seven countries including Albania and Turkey boycotted the awards ceremony in protest.

  • Gurgaon-based startup won ‘Space Oscar’ award
    The Gurgaon-based startup Blue Sky Analytics has created an application called ‘Zuri’ that won the Copernicus Masters Award also called Space Oscars.

    It won it under the Social Entrepreneurship category.

    The application uses satellite data to provide improved monitoring, supply chain and pricing analysis as well as the allocation of crop waste to be used as raw materials in other industries.

  • Awards for the first ever VATAVARAN 2019 were presented Current Affairs
    The Awards for the first-ever VATAVARAN-2019 Short Film Competition and Festival on Environment was presented in New Delhi. It was organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) and Centre for Media Studies (CMS).

    The awards were presented by Shri Ravi Agrawal, Additional Secretary, MoEF&CC at the culmination of the four-day festival where all the shortlisted films were showcased. The Jury comprising Shri Ramesh Sippy, Shri Rahul Rawail, Ms. Manju Borah and Ms. Agnimitra Paul selected the final awardees for the competition.

  • Ajit Doval was awarded the honorary doctorate at HNBGU
    Ajit Doval, the National Security Advisor (NSA), was awarded the honorary doctorate at the Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University (HNBGU) convocation ceremony held at Srinagar.

    Around 414 students and scholars were awarded. Among them, 45 students received gold medals for scoring excellent marks.

    • AjitDoval is the 5th National Security Advisor (NSA) to the Prime Minister of India. He assumed office on 30 May 2014.
    • In 2004-05, he served as the Director of the Intelligence Bureau. He is considered as an important person in Indian revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
    • He has received Police Medal, President's Police Medal awards for his meritorious service. In 1988 he was awarded the Kirti Chakra.
    • He became the first police officer to receive the medal.

  • Lionel Messi was conferred the Ballon d'Or award
    Lionel Messi was named the best player and was awarded the 2019 Ballon d'Or award in Paris. He created a world record by receiving the award for the sixth time.

    He broke the record set by Cristiano Ronaldo by winning the trophy five times. He Cristiano Ronaldo stands third in the men's rankings behind Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk.

    Lionel Messi won the award for the first in 2009. He then won the award in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015.

    Megan Rapinoe won the Ballon d’Or as the world’s best player. She beat Lucy Bronze and Alex Morgan to claim the title. In July 2019, the United States to the World Cup title.

  • President Kovind presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards
    The President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind presented the National Florence Nightingale Awards to nursing personnel in New Delhi on 5 December 2019. The event will be held from 5-6 December 2019. The nurses play a vital role in delivering quality and cost-effective healthcare, addressing multiple health challenges and responding to the health needs of individuals, families, and communities.

    The nurses are a symbol of seva, karuna, and shushrusha. Nurses are the face of healthcare services for the patients and their families.

    There is an increasing number of elderly people who deserve and require proper geriatric care. In India, the elders are taken care of their old age parents. Professional caregivers are in demand to take care of the elderly.

    It should be noted that the nursing training institutions can consider developing short training programs for such care-givers too.

    World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced 2020 as the Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
