  • Deepa Malik honoured with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award
    Current AffairsPresident Ram Nath Kovind on 29 August, 2019 gave away the National Sports and National Adventure Awards at a special function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, on the occasion of National Sports Day.

    Para-athlete Deepa Malik was conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Fourteen sports persons were conferred with Arjuna Awards for the year 2019.

    They include cricketer Poonam Yadav, athlete Swapna Barman, wrestler Pooja Dhanda, footballer Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, bodybuilder S. Bhaskaran, boxer Sonia Lather, kabaddi player Ajay Thakur, table tennis player Harmeet Rajul Desai and badminton player Bhamidipati Sai Praneeth.

    Dronacharya Awards in the regular category were given to Sandeep Gupta in Table tennis and Vimal Kumar in badminton. Dronacharya Awards in lifetime category were given to Sanjay Bhardwaj in Cricket, Rambir Singh Khokar in Kabaddi and Merzban Patel in Hockey.

    Dhyan Chand Awards were given to Manoj Kumar in Wrestling, C Lalremsanga in Archery, Arup Basak in Table Tennis, Nitten Kirrtane in Tennis and Manuel Fredricks in Hockey. President also conferred Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Awards, 2018 to six persons.

    Football player and Arjuna awardee Gurpreet Singh Sandhu expressed happiness at receiving the award.

  • DAY-NULM conferred SKOCH Governance Gold Award
    Dendayan Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), a flagship mission under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has been conferred the prestigious SKOCH Governance Gold Award.

    It was awarded for its Portal for Affordable Credit and Interest Subvention Access (PAiSA).

    PAiSA is a centralized IT platform which was launched in November 2018.

  • Union Minister Smriti Irani conferred Poshan Abhiyaan Awards for the year 2018-19
    Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani on 23 August, 2019 gave away the Poshan Abhiyaan Awards for the year 2018-19 in different categories at a function in New Delhi.

    The awards were given to the States, Districts, Blocks and Anganwadi Workers for their contributions in scaling up the Abhiyaan and ensuring that it reaches every household in the country.

    Poshan Abhiyaan is a multi - ministerial convergence mission with the vision to address malnutrition with a targeted approach by 2022 across the country.

    As many as 363 awards worth 22 crore rupees were presented to the awardees. She expressed hope that with the help of all the stakeholders, the challenges of malnutrition will be addressed and the country will become malnutrition-free.

    A month-long Poshan Abhiyaan will begin from September, 2019 in which the government has set a target to connect 44 crore people. She said, 22 crore people were added through this programme during the last year (2018).

    The exercise to combat the problem of malnutrition needs active involvement of all the District Collectors.

    It is required to promote the understanding and capacity of District Administrations in nutrition and nutrition-based policies.

    Britannia Awards are presented by BAFTA Los Angeles. It is a branch of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), as a bridge between the Hollywood and British production and entertainment business communities.

    The Britannia Awards ceremony is presented at a black-tie gala dinner and Beverly Hilton Hotel.

  • Abhinandan Varthaman to be awarded Vir Chakra
    Indian Air Force (IAF) Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman will be awarded the Vir Chakra gallantry medal .

    The Vir Chakra award is an Indian gallantry award for acts of Bravery on the battlefield. The award will recognises his grit, determination and bravery.

    Days after Pulwama attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out an airstrike at a terror camp run by Jaish-e-Mohammed. During confrontation,

    IAF pilot Abhinandan Varthaman shot down a Pakistan F-16 jet on February 27. He spent nearly 60 hours in Pakistan's custody after his MiG-21 Bison was shot down by Pakistan Air Force F-16s in February in the dogfight. Abhinandan Varthaman downed an F-16 fighter jet of the Pakistan Air Force.

  • ISRO ChairmanK Sivan Conferred With Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award
    Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman K Sivan awarded the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Award by the Tamil Nadu government.

    Kailasavadivoo Sivan, who led ISRO's successful launch of Chandrayaan-2 mission receive the award in person receive it from Chief Minister K Palaniswami.

    The award is given in recognition of his stellar work in promotion of science and technology.The Kalam award is to honour those who work for promoting scientific growth, humanities and students' welfare.

    The award carries 8 gm gold medal, Rs. five lakh in cash and a citation.Mr Sivan's leadership led to the historical achievement of most successful GSLV flight with indigenous cryogenic stage.

    ISRO successfully launched Chandrayaan 2, the second mission to the moon on July 22 and he was the chief architect of SITARA, a 6D trajectory simulation software.

    He worked on the design and development of launch vehicles for ISRO and has contributed immensely towards end to end mission planning, design, and mission integration and analysis.

    The 62-year-old space scientist was a first graduate in his family, who got a Bachelor's degree in engineering from the Madras Institute of Technology in 1980.He was a recipient of several awards including Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (1999).

    Mr Sivan to receive the award at the Independence Day celebrations at Fort St George in Chennai.

    The Kalam's birthday (October 15) will be observed as "Youth Renaissance Day."The first Kalam award was presented by Jayalalithaa in 2015 to ISRO scientist N Valarmathi and it is given on Independence Day every year.

  • Bhasha Mukherjee Was Crowned MISS ENGLNAD
    Current AffairsBhasha Mukherjee, an Indian-origin doctor, has been crowned MISS ENGLAND in Miss England competition in London.

    The event was held from 31 July to 1 August.

    The winners bagged over GBP 30,000 worth of prizes, which include a luxury holiday to Mauritius.

    Alisha Cowie was crowned MISS ENGLAND 2018.

    Bhasha Mukherjee is a indian Haryana origin girl about 23 year old from Derby. She holds two different medical degrees.

    She is fluent in five languages. She has started new job as a junior doctor in a hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire, after the Miss England final ended on 1st August.

    She will be participating in the 69th Miss World contest to be held in December in London.

  • President confers Bharat Ratna on Pranab Mukherjee
    President Ram Nath Kovind on 08 August, 2019 conferred country's highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna on former President Pranab Mukherjee and posthumously on social activist Nanaji Deshmukh and singer Bhupen Hazarika.

    Pranab Mukherjee received the award from the President, at a function in Rashtrapati Bhawan. Bhupen Hazarika's son Tej Hazarika received the award on his behalf. While a relative of Nanaji Deshmukh, Virender Jeet Singh received the award for him.

    Vice President M Venkaikah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and several Union Ministers were present at the function.

  • ISRO announced Vikram Sarabhai Award
    ISRO has announced its Vikram Sarabhai Journalism Award in Space Science, Technology and Research.

    It recognizes and rewards journalists who have actively contributed towards the field of space science, applications, and research.

    The articles published from 2019 to 2020 will be considered.

    The nominations are open to all Indians who have a good experience in journalism.

  • Ravish Kumar won Ramon Magsaysay award 2019
    Current AffairsIndian journalist Ravish Kumar has been awarded the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award for harnessing journalism to give voice to the voiceless.

    The award was started in 1957 and celebrates the leadership example of the former Philippine President Ramon del Fierro Magsaysay.

    The awardees are presented with a medallion with a right side facing profile image of Ramon Magsaysay and a certificate.
