Globalisation has brought infrastructure sector boom in a gigantic manner all over the world resulting in great demand for Civil engineers.
Civil Engineers play a pivotal role in creating the man made environment and protecting the natural environment. Modern constructions, skyscrapers, underground railways, metro rails, gigantic malls apartments, airports, harbours, rail and road net works, Satellite launching stations are all result of civil engineer vision, planning and execution. Civil Engineering course is offered by various prestigious institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology, National institutes of Technology, BITS, IIIT(Hyderabad)and other prominent engineering colleges including Technological universities, other universities and in private sector . For IIT’S the admission is through JEE, for NITs and some other colleges there is AIEEE and in Andhra Pradesh, admission to the engineering courses is done through state level entrance test EAMCET.
Higher education
After completing a B.Tech/B.E in civil engineering, higher education (M.Tech or M.S) can be pursued in India as well as abroad in various specializations such as transportation engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, remote sensing, hydraulic & water resources engineering , environmental engineering , infrastructural Engineering construction management etc. Some of the institutions are offering five year integrated dual degree programmes ie., in five years, a student can get B.Tech in Civil Engineering and M.Tech/MBA in his field of interest, thus saving one valuable year. Further, the civil engineering graduates are eligible for doing Masters programmes in computer science, IT, MBA etc. based on their interest. Facilities are also available for doing masters courses on part time basis for working people with B.Tech degree to enhance their knowledge and qualifications.
Job profiles
A civil engineer mainly deals with design construction and maintenance of infrastructure such as buildings, bridges, roads, tunnels, dams, river and canal maintenance, ports and harbours, railways, industrial and power plants, water supply and purification units, pollution control units etc. Even though Civil engineers usually work in sites, people nowadays opt for planning, designing, estimation and valuation, designing, drafting who can stay back in offices and work on computers with the available software. Further, Civil engineers are also considered and offered jobs in software companies on par with others.
Skills
With interest in design and construction sector one should have strong hold in the subject with communication skills. To grow higher in career, teamwork sprit and management skills with knowledge and hard work are essential. Today, the requirement of the infrastructure field is such that, companies are ready to pay huge packages on par with software engineers for good civil engineers.
Organizations that recruit Civil engineers
Civil engineers have plenty of opportunities in government and private sector organizations. The state government organizations/departments include Roads and Buildings, Irrigation, Panchayat Raj, Rural Water Supply, Water Supply, Pollution Control Board, Research laboratories.
Central government organizations like Railways, CPWD, National highways, RITES, National Disaster Management Board etc. All state and central govt. undertakings recruit civil engineers for their construction and maintenance of civil woks. Even the central and state governments are recruiting civil engineers every year through UPSC and APPSC. In the private sector, Jaypee, Reliance Infra, L&T, ACC, LANCO, SOMA,PATEL ENGEERS, DLF offer job openings for the civil engineers.
The civil engineers can open up their own consultancy and construction companies and can become job providers instead of job seekers where many reputed companies today are examples for such activity.
Salary
The starting salary for a civil engineering graduate is around Rs15,000 to 25,000 per month. With experience and skills one can get Rs 40000 or more within four to five years. People with civil and construction management qualifications are paid huge packages.
Advice
A student choosing the civil engineering branch must have learning spirit, analyzing ability and creativity. With proper training and experience, they can build a great career. But a student’s dream of a white collar job doesn’t fulfill cent percent, as the civil engineering job demands knowledge and experience in field work. However, working with nature and people coupled with office work make civil engineers healthier, worldly wise and better human resources managers. Substantial hard work, sincerity and command on subject can make wonders in the career of a civil engineer.
