Degree Courses Update: Is the Bucket System in Degree Colleges Getting Scrapped?
Sakshi Education
Hyderabad, February 17 – The Bucket System in Degree Courses (BOC), which allows students to choose subjects from different disciplines, might soon be scrapped. Indications suggest that the traditional degree structure could make a comeback as several colleges have opposed the existing system.

Degree Courses: Key Highlights
- Bucket System Implementation (Since 2021): Degree courses were divided into four buckets (A, B, C, D), reducing the number of available courses to 505 from several dozen earlier.
- College Opposition: Many colleges have raised concerns over the bucket system, citing a drop in admissions for Physics and Chemistry courses while Computer Science remains in high demand.
- Higher Education Council Meeting: The Board of Studies (BoS) discussed issues with subject combinations and redundancy.
- No Final Decision Yet: Professor S.K. Mahmood, Vice Chairman of the Higher Education Council, confirmed that no decision has been made yet on scrapping the system.
What is the Bucket System?
The Bucket System allows students to pick interdisciplinary subjects.
- Example: A B.Sc. Science student can choose subjects from a B.A. course like Psychology, Philosophy, or Economics.
- It enables Arts students to take Science courses and vice versa, increasing flexibility in course selection.
- Each bucket contains a set of subjects, and students can pick major subjects from two different courses plus one subject from another bucket.
New Courses in B.Sc.
Experts have suggested introducing six new B.Sc. courses aligned with industry requirements. Last year, the B.Sc. Biomedical Sciences program was introduced, and this year, officials are considering additional specialized science courses.
