The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) will conduct an Open Competitive Computer Based Examination for direct recruitment to the posts of Stenographer Grade ‘C’ (Group ‘B’, Non-Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade ‘D’ (Group ‘C’). Only candidates with skills in stenography are eligible to apply.

SSC Stenographer Grade 'C' & 'D' Recruitment 2024 - Eligibility Criteria:

Qualification: Passed 12th standard or equivalent examination.

Age Limit (As on 01/08/24):

  • Stenographer Grade ‘C’: Up to 30 years.
  • Stenographer Grade ‘D’: Up to 27 years.

SSC Stenographer Grade 'C' & 'D' Recruitment 2024 - Application Fee:
Candidates can apply for the SSC Stenographer Grade C & D posts by paying a fee of Rs.100/- online. Payment can be made through BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or Credit/Debit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, RuPay). 
Note: Women candidates and those belonging to SC/ ST/ PwBD and Ex-Servicemen categories are exempted from paying the application fee.

  • Step 1: Visit the Official SSC Website: Go to SSC’s official website and click on the “Apply” button in the top header bar.
  • Step 2: Select Stenographer C & D: Look for the option below the main header and choose “SSC Stenographer C & D.”
  • Step 3: Fill in Basic Details: Enter your basic information, including Name, Gender, Date of Birth (DOB), and Father’s name. Ensure that your DOB matches the matriculation certificate.
  • Step 4: Complete Captcha and Contact Details: Enter the Captcha and proceed to provide your personal contact details, such as email address and phone number.
  • Step 5: Upload Photo and Signature: Follow the instructions on the SSC Stenographer Online Application page to upload your photo and signature.
  • Step 6: Select Exam Center and Code: Choose your preferred exam center along with the applicable code.
  • Step 7: Mention Category Code and Post: Specify the category code and the post you are applying for.
  • Step 8: Educational Qualification: Indicate your educational qualifications in the application form.
  • Step 9: Verify Contact Details: Ensure that your contact details are accurate for further communication.

Question paper will be of Objective Type Multiple Choice only. The questions will be set both in English & Hindi.

Note: There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Candidates are, therefore, advised to keep this in mind while answering the questions.

SSC Stenographer C & D Exam Syllabus 2024 

General Intelligence & Reasoning: It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. The test will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series etc. The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate’s abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationship, arithmetical computation and other analytical functions.

General Awareness: Questions will be designed to test the ability of the candidates‟ general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test the knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighboring countries especially pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene, General Polity including Indian Constitution, and Scientific Research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline. For VH candidates of 40% and above visual disability, there will be no component of Maps/Graphs/Diagrams/Statistical Data in the General Intelligence & Reasoning/ General Awareness Paper.

English Language & Comprehension: In addition to the testing of candidates' understanding of the English Language, its vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and its correct usage, etc., his/ her writing ability would also be tested.

Skill Test in Stenography: (i) The candidates who are shortlisted in the Computer Based Examination will be required to appear in the Skill Test for Stenography. The candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English or Hindi (as opted by the candidates in the online Application Form) at the speed of 100 words per minute (w.p.m.) for the post of Stenographer Grade „C‟ and 80 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade "D". The matter will have to be transcribed on computer. The transcription time is as follows:

Candidates who opt to take the Stenography Test in Hindi will be required to learn English Stenography and vice versa after their appointment, failing which their probation may not be cleared by appointing departments. Candidates have to work as English/Hindi stenographers as per the functional requirement of the User Office irrespective of the medium of Skill Test of candidate during the examination.

The Skill Test will be held at the Commission’s Regional Offices or at other Centre(s) as may be decided by the Commission.

Detailed instructions, if any, regarding Skill Test will be provided by the concerned Regional Offices of the Commission to the candidates called for the Skill Test.
